Thesaurus

A thesaurus is a controlled vocabulary of concepts, including the key ideas that are represented in your organization or electronic library. Thesauri expand on a term list with term records that include related terms and non-preferred terms (alternate expressions). Scope notes, editor's notes, and term history aid in developing and maintaining a thesaurus. Additionally, term records can include term origin information, literary warrant, translations, notation, and other fields to hold specific required data.

The hierarchical structure puts terms in context as well as offering a website navigation tool. (See Taxonomy Basics for more about thesauri.)

Rule Base

Improve document retrieval as well as the relevance and precision of search returns for the end user. A rule-based text categorization system can associate appropriate terms from your thesaurus with each item in your electronic collection. Basic, expanded, and customized rule bases are available as a complement to any of the thesauri.

Training

Available as printed directed learning, or as Flash videos, modules are available to teach basic thesaurus principles, thesaurus construction, rule-based text classification, and the use of authority files. Topics are added regularly to the collection.
