What Exactly is a Thesaurus?
A thesaurus is a controlled vocabulary of concepts, including the key ideas that are represented an organization or the content of an electronic library. Thesauri expand on a term list with term records that include related terms and non-preferred terms (alternate expressions). Scope notes, editor’s notes, and term history aid in developing and managing a thesaurus. Additionally, term records can include term origin information, literary warrant, translations, notation, and other fields to hold specific required data.

Are There Standards for Thesauri?
Numerous standards relate to thesaurus construction, two major ones being ANSI/NISO Z39.19 – Guidelines for the Construction, Format, and Management of Monolingual Controlled Vocabularies and ISO 25964 – the international standard for thesauri and interoperability with other vocabularies. Access Innovations follows the NISO and ISO standards, as well as World Wide Web Consortium recommendation, to ensure that your thesaurus or taxonomy has the broadest possible implementation options. The W3C recommendations cover Web Ontology Language (OWL) as well as the several emerging SKOS (Simple Knowledge Organization System) options. The hierarchical structure puts terms in context to make it easier to understand.
Web Display Option
Your thesaurus can also be combined with a wrapper that creates a hierarchy tree integrated with links, and an XQuery request function to search an XML document database for matching documents. This provides enhanced information retrieval through user-friendly Web site navigation.
