Data Harmony® Users Group (DHUG) 2014 Meeting Wrapup

The Tenth Data Harmony® Users Group Meeting (DHUG 2014) was a resounding success! We wrapped up the event on Friday, February 14th, complete with chocolates and Valentine’s Day décor throughout the office. A wonderful finale indeed! The attendance at DHUG 2014 included representatives of associations such as the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), the American Institute of Physics (AIP) and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).

This year’s meeting allowed for great focus and one-on-one discussions with our clients. Monday, February 10th was the first day. The meeting began after breakfast in our office, with introductory talks by staff members Alice Redmond-Neal, Jack Bruce, and CEO Jay Van Eman. Information was presented regarding taxonomy basics, as well as pointers on how to build a solid thesaurus for project use. Eric Ziecker gave a tutorial on optimizing searches, using shorthand techniques on existing engines such as Bing or Google.

Tuesday and Wednesday featured multiple case studies and presentations from software users, both by Access Innovations staff and speakers within our client base. Client presentations were largely representative of projects and collaborations underwent last year. Access Innovations president Marjorie M.K. Hlava began Tuesday talks by unveiling Data Harmony version 3.9, with details on new features and improvements. Cases on Tuesday included Marcie Zaharee from The MITRE Corporation, who discussed her team’s experiences using Data Harmony to document taxonomies from Intelligence Surveillance Reconnaissance data, a project ordered by the U.S. Department of Defense. Anna Jester’s project at eJournalPress utilized Data Harmony software to enable identification of submitted manuscripts, using searchable terms within a submission’s content and allowing for more accurate peer matching and review. Rachel Drysdale and Helen Atkins, both from the Public Library of Science (PLoS), detailed the roles of thesauri in both website construction (PLOS ONE) and applying editorial strategies.

Wednesday featured more in-house studies, such as Data Harmony’s applications for Medical Claims Compliance standards as demonstrated by John Kuranz, CEO of Access Innovations’ division, Access Integrity. In-house editor Gena San Nicholas described our software’s dictionary and inline tagging capabilities, which improve ease of use, even for beginner users. Thursday and Friday involved hands-on training with the new version of Data Harmony. Alice, Bob, and other Access Innovations staff members provided individual consultation and instruction on Data Harmony software for interested guests.

Thursday involved practice with Thesaurus Master®, M.A.I.™ and the DH Admin Module. On Friday, our attendees worked on implementing XIS projects, using the new M.A.I. Batch Interface Module, and rule-building strategies and concepts.

In between presentations, food and drink were provided on-site. On Monday evening, guests gathered at the Hampton Inn Albuquerque Midtown for a welcome reception with staff. Our Tuesday dinner was hosted by the fantastic National Museum of Nuclear Science and History. Given the recent nationwide airport delays and cancellations, we were lucky that comedian Brad Upton was able to make it Tuesday night to entertain us after dinner.

We are already preparing for the Eleventh annual Data Harmony® Users Group (DHUG) Meeting, February 16th through the 20th in 2015.
